Choose the Right Rigging Equipment

By Tim Muprhy 5 months ago No comments

When comparing your options for Rigging Equipment, it is important to choose equipment that will get the job done in a safe manner. Using the wrong rigging components is a recipe for disaster. With the right information, you will have no problem selecting the right equipment for a job while dramatically reducing risk to property and people.

Unfortunately, many companies do not possess the required knowledge about rigging equipment. This makes the selection process a major challenge. Between a chain sling, wire rope sling, and other options, it is easy to get confused and feel overwhelmed. Especially for heavy-duty lifting, it is critical that you know the differences between the various options for rigging supplies.

Special Considerations

  • You want to purchase the highest-quality equipment afforded by your budget. In addition to being a more efficient and safer choice, quality rigging supplies will last longer compared to subpar brands.
  • Different types of equipment are affected by temperature. Permanently remove alloy steel-chain slings from service if it is heated above 1000ºF. When exposed to service temperatures in excess of 600ºF, employers must reduce the maximum working-load limits permitted by the chain manufacturer in accordance with the chain or sling manufacturer's recommendations. Wire rope slings designed with a metallic core may not operate properly at temperatures greater than 400º or less than minus-40º F. Metal mesh slings without a polymer coating are another example. These slings typically are not recommended for temperatures greater than 500º F (With Polymer coating limited 180ºF). Most Synthetic Web or Fiber slings are limited to 180ºF. To make the right choice, you will need to determine the temperature for your operation and provide it to your supplier for recommendation.
  • Another vital factor is load limit, which equates to the maximum weight that can be safely applied to any piece of rigging equipment. Keep in mind that the load limit may not always be the same for each type of equipment. When selecting you rigging components, know the Load Rating or Working Load Limit. DO NOT EXCEED THE LOAD RATING OR WORKING LOAD LIMIT.
  • When buying rigging supplies, durability is also an important consideration. As long as the equipment is properly and regularly maintained and inspected, it should easily last as long as the manufacturer claims.

Obtain your Rigging from a reputable company. They should provide the expert guidance and input needed to make the right decision. This will give you confidence that the equipment chosen will get the job done and provide the most safety.
